Abstract:

The samples were collected from 110 stations throughout Vietnamese coastal waters during survey in the southwest monsoon. The research results showed that, a total of 372 phytoplankton species were identified, belonging to 108 genera of 72 families, 44 ordes of 6 phyla: Bacillariophyta - 214 species, Pyrrophyta – 125 species, Chlorophyta – 16 species, Cyanobacteria - 11 species, Euglenophyta - 4 species, Silicoflagellata - 2 species. The number of phytoplankton species in the southwest monsoon in coastal waters was more than open sea, especially fresh water alga. However, diversity and stable level of phytoplankton community in coastal waters was less than open sea.   The cell abundance of phytoplankton showed significant difference in different areas. Among the four sampling areas, the Southeast coastal waters was found to have the maximum density of phytoplankton - 110x103 cells/l whereas the Central coastal waters had the minimum density of phytoplankton - 2x103 cells/l.
