Abstract

   This study was conducted to estimatethe fishing efforts and catches of the purse seine fisheries in the Tonkin Gulf, based on the data from commercial fisheries surveys conducted by “The comprehensive surveys on fisheries resources in Viet Nam”, Phase I (2011-2016) and Phase II 2016-2020. The quartlyestimates of fishing effortsfor purse seine fisheries in the Tonkin Gulf was about 15,600 boat days. The highest catch rate was recorded during the third quarter annually. The main fishing grounds for purse seine fisheries in the Tonkin Gulf were including: (1) Northwest Bach Long Vy island; (2) Central part of Tonkin Gulf; (3) Gulf opening area. The estimates of total catches of purse seine fisheries in the Tonkin Gulf (2015) was about 60.552 thousand tones. The catch composition were mainly small pelagic fishes (including round scad, japanese scad, sardines, indian mackerel, anchovy and yellow tail scad) and highly variated by the moonson.
